Shelton Ansley
When I first considered pursuing another advanced degree, I wasn’t looking for just another line on my resume. With an MBA already under my belt and a background in economic development, I was searching for a program that would open doors to the rapidly changing world of sustainable energy, which aligned with my future goals.
Being a seasoned professional with a family, program flexibility was a necessity for me. When speaking with admission representatives of the MA in Sustainable Energy (online), they highlighted the format. They told me that, typically, there would be one evening a week of virtual meetings, plus assignments I’d complete on my own schedule. This arrangement meant I could still pursue my education without disrupting my professional life or family commitments that were so important to me.
For someone without a background in energy, I felt it was important to learn from the very best in the industry to help me bridge to this amazing industry. Johns Hopkins University has a well-known reputation for academic excellence, so this means learning from industry leaders and experts in the world of energy who bring superb insights into the virtual classroom.
While other programs offer either a narrow technical perspective or a broad generalist view, Johns Hopkins provides a comprehensive curriculum that weaves together economics, policy, and technological innovation. The program also ensures we comprehend and appreciate how energy systems can transform communities and drive economic advancement around the globe.
Finally, I wanted to learn in an environment that embraced my non-linear career path, and this program delivered that perfectly. It values diverse professional experiences, recognizing that solving complex energy challenges requires perspectives from many fields. By combining my communications and economic development expertise with sustainable energy knowledge, I’m positioning myself at the intersection of innovation and impact.
Since my first week of class, I have been constantly amazed by my professors and fellow classmates. Everyone brings their best to our classroom discussions, and the time flies each time we meet. My knowledge of sustainable energy has grown by leaps and bounds since I started the program. I’m confident that I made the right choice in choosing Johns Hopkins University.
As a Johns Hopkins SAIS admissions fellow, I’m available to chat with prospective students about my experience in the program. Set up a time to talk with me.
