Applying to the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies is exciting—and receiving an acceptance letter is even better! Here are some tips from someone who has been there, who went through this process and successfully became a Johns Hopkins SAIS student.
Take the Time to Create a Standout Application Essay That Shows Your Growth
When I was completing my application for MA in Sustainable Energy (online) I heard that Johns Hopkins SAIS placed a big emphasis on the application essays, and they were right.
Previous test scores and GPA are important, but the admissions office takes a holistic approach to applications. They know people grow and develop skills that are not represented by a stagnant GPA or past exam score. Because of this, I advise that you take the time to write a compelling personal statement that showcases your growth. Explain why you chose Johns Hopkins SAIS and how the program aligns with your career goals.
Also, make sure to proofread, rewrite and repeat. The third or fourth draft is always better than the first.
Make Sure Your Application Packet Tells a Clear, Compelling Story
Build a cohesive story across your application that clearly defines who you are to the admissions team.
Think of this as professional storytelling, with the admissions team as your audience. The goal is that when your name comes up in the admissions office, they can say, “That’s David, he’s the army veteran who wants to work in sustainable development.”
When all parts of your application tell a cohesive, compelling story about who you are, you will stand out.
I approached my application packet with the intent of answering a few simple questions:
- What experience(s) can I highlight that influenced me academically and/or professionally?
- Why am I interested in the MA in Sustainable Energy?
- What are my professional goals, and how will an MA in Sustainable Energy help me achieve them?
I also researched the SAIS history and mission and made sure to highlight information that correlated.
Confirm That the Program’s Academic Standards and Cohort Style Align With Your Priorites
I also took time to make sure that the School of Advanced International Studies aligned with my values. Having shared values with my potential university was essential to me. Johns Hopkins SAIS absolutely checked all the boxes, and you should make sure it does the same for you!
Personally, I wanted to be surrounded by people who shared my passion for world culture, IR theory, professionalism, and world relations. I made this clear throughout my application.
